OpenRails is a derivative of MSTS and supports MSTS route and trains. When Microsoft shuttered the MSTS team and games, the community stepped up and made OpenRails. The community supported the game with many quality routes and trains to play. At the time MSTS the go to simulator if you wanted drive a train. Yes there are others that came first, but MSTS is the one that really kicked off the genre. Microsoft Train Simulator is the original train sim.

Personally on my system I get decent FPS, 40-60+. The game lists the recommended system specs, but even those are on the weaker end. Trainz also is deceptively resource hungry. Meaning that you favorite route or locomotive or rolling stock might no longer work in newer versions of Trainz. Content also isn't all ways updated to work with the newer versions of Trainz.

Some free locomotives look like they should cots $20, and others look like you could be paid $20 to suffer looking at them. The fact that a vast majority of the content is community made, means that the quality of that content varies wildly. The great thing about Trainz is that it allows the user to make the experience they want. It all comes down to how much work and effort the users wants to put into it, and what the user over all wants. From modeling instant loading, to proper car forwarding. And with a variety of content in the form of buildings, rules, and other assets, almost any form of railroad operations can be mimicked. Trainz route building tools are powerful enough to allow users to build their dream model train layout or rebuild the line that runs though their home down in great detail. A quick look shows an estimated 603,090 items, however this number could be on the lower end due to limits in content manager.

Because Trainz is open to adding any content, Trainz has amassed a large collection of free content. Since Trainz 2012 (2010 had it in beta) Trainz has had multiplayer sessions. Users can also import their own models into the game, allowing them to create any locomotives, buildings, rolling stock, or scenery items that they want or need for. Users are free to build any route they want and run any trains they want on these routes. But has grown into a multi use train sim.

The Trainz series of games/sims started out as model railroad planning software/game. (crap I feel old now.) And Open Rails a little bit. Been playing Train sim/ Railworks since Railworks 3. I've played Trainz from 06 all the way to 19. But I will try to touch base on a bit of these as objectively as possible. But I've been meaning to make some sort of video on the subject, but a combination of laziness, real life stuff, and other hobbies has all ways gotten in my way.
